XITENDE

The Band

XITENDE (“she-ten-day”) was formed in 1985 following the break-up of Simeão Mazuze’s group Xigutsa-Vuma, drawing on traditional Mozambican and other Afro musical roots, such as Makwai, Zore, Tufo, Limbondo, Marrabenta, which were the base of band’s repertoire in the late ’80s.  This band itself split up, but 10 years later, in 1999, a completely new XITENDE reappeared under the leadership of Valdemar Mbezane, who gathered together some young musicians to develop a fusion of Mozambican roots with other global influences such as Reggae, Jazz, Funk, Pantsula, etc.  They were then joined by some more experienced musicians who were becoming disillusioned with the onward march of rap and hip-hop and their computerized accompaniments.  Since then, the band has seen further changes of personnel, in particular the tragic death of Valdemar Mbezane in a car accident on Valentine’s day 2005.  Despite this blow, and possibly because of a deeply felt need to validate what Valdemar had started, the band continued, and has become a fixture in the Maputo weekend, playing Friday nights at the Xima bar, which, thanks to the band’s wide fan base, has grown from a dusty back yard to a modern night club.

The thread that runs through this history is a love for Mozambique’s rich musical heritage, and a commitment to a collective process of music-making where each band member listens and blends with the whole. Together with this lack of hierarchy within the band comes a strong independent spirit. 

A Banda

A BANDA XITENDE foi fundada em 1985 aquando da dissolução do agrupamento musical Xigutsa-Vuma de Simeão Mazuze, na base de raízes na música tradicional moçambicana e africana, como Makwai, Zore, Tufo, Limbondo, Marrabenta que constituíam a base do repertório da banda no final dos anos oitenta.  Esta banda se desfez também, mas 10 anos depois, em 1999, um XITENDE completamente novo reapareceu, liderada por Valdemar Mbezane, que reuniu alguns músicos jovens para desenvolver uma fusão de raízes moçambicanas com outras influências globais, como Reggae, Jazz, Funk, Pantsula, etc. Depois entraram no conjunto alguns músicos mais experientes que estavam desiludidos com o avanço do rap e hip-hop e os seus acompanhamentos computorizados.  Desde então, a banda passou por outras mudanças de pessoal, em particular a morte trágica de Valdemar Mbezane num acidente de carro em 2005, no Dia dos Namorados.

Apesar deste golpe, e possivelmente por causa de uma necessidade profunda de validar o projecto iniciado por Valdemar, a banda continuou, e se tornou um ponto fixo no fim de semana maputense, actuando nas sextas-feiras no bar Xima, que, graças aos muitos fãs da banda, evoluiu de um quintal empoeirado numa boate moderna.  A tendência que percorre esta história é um amor pela rica herança musical de Moçambique, e um compromisso para um processo colectivo de fazer música, onde cada membro da banda escuta bem os colegas e integra-se com o todo.
